more than 80% of magnesium is used in lightweight applications
Magnesium's largest application is aluminum alloying. In general, magnesium imparts increased strength & ductility as well as improved corrosion resistance & weldability.
Magnesium is especially critical in 5000 & 6000 series aluminum alloys used to produce lightweight sheet, plate, extrusions & forgings for a variety of automotive, transport, aerospace and consumer goods.
Magnesium's 2nd largest application is lightweight Commercial Magnesium Alloys which typically contain up to 9% aluminum as well as smaller amounts of zinc & manganese.
Magnesium alloys provide significant weight savings over all other alloys and exhibit excellent strength, stiffness, corrosion resistance, castability, machinability & dent resistance.
Commercial Magnesium alloys are used to produce die-castings, extrusions, plate, forgings & sheet for automotive parts & a variety of consumer goods
Specialty Magnesium Alloys often contain zirconium, yttrium & rare earths. They provide superior elevated temperature properties, good corrosion resistance & excellent castability & machining.
Specialty Magnesium Alloys are often used to produce large, highly detailed sand castings for a variety of lightweight aerospace engine components
